Historic Properties

The immediate area has many historic properties, examples include Sizergh Castle (a National Trust property), Levens Hall, Holker Hall and Gardens and Cartmel Priory all of which are within a 10 minute drive. Further afield is Muncaster Castle.

Swimming

Exclusive to Thornfield House guests is the use of the Abbot Hall Hotel swimming pool facilities for just £5 per adult and £2.50 per child (free use of pool towels). The website for Abbot Hall Hotel offers more details on the facilities at www.christianguild.co.uk.

Children’s activities

A trip out on a steam train is easily organised with the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway only a 15 minute drive away. This takes passengers from Haverthwaite to Lake Windermere where you can enjoy the Aquarium of the Lake museum or a trip on a lake steamer. Further afield is the Ravensglass & Eskdale Railway (Lal Ratty) that runs from the coast up two valleys to the foot of England’s highest mountain.

If animals are of interest there is Ducky’s Farm Park , Greenlands Farm Village and the Maize Maze all of which combine soft indoor play areas (excellent for letting off steam on wet days) with traditional farm animals. The alternative to traditional farm visits is a trip to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park or the Lakeland Oasis both of which house more exotic animals and mini beasts.

The World of Beatrix Potter attraction is located in Bowness on Windermere.

General

There are many options for exploring the lakes, tarns and mountains that make up the Lake District National Park.  Whether by car, boat, steam train, hiking, cycling or a combination there is always something to explore.  Close to home there is Hampsfell where the Hospice, built in 1846, offers shelter and panoramic views, a mile long promenade with teashop and a wealth of individual shops and coffee shops to explore.

We are located on the Walney to Wear (W2W) cycle route and on the Cumbrian Coastal path.

The Promenade in Grange-over-Sands is the location for Prom Art on the last Sunday in each month, an outdoor Art and Craft Show, entry free.
